The supreme court, of the corporate United states, hands down United states v. Martinez-Fuerte, overturning United states v. Ortiz:, which was decided just a year previously: immigration checkpoints that search “vehicles” (a legal term for “automobiles or trucks” bearing goods, services or persons in commercial transit)—without “probable cause”—are no longer a violation of Article IV of Amendment.  The six that switched their votes are Warren E. Burger, chief justice of the U.s., and associate justices Lewis F. Powell, Jr., Potter Stewart, Byron White, Harry Blackmum and William Rehnquist.
