The Cold War continues: Fifty-eight-year-old Ida Siekmann becomes the first Berliner to be killed attempting to cross the “Berlin Wall” (barbed wire) that had only been up for nine days.  Siekmann would have turned 59 the next day.

Postscript: The actual physical Berlin Wall was not completed until 1965.  And the “death strip” not completed until 1980.
