Adolfo Lopez Mateos, Secretary of Labor, candidate of the status quo Institutional Revolutionary Party (PRI), for President of Mexico, claims electoral victory over industrialist and political activist Luis H. Alvarez, candidate of the free-market National Action Party (PAN) (90.4% to 9.4%).  During the election Alvarez was denied airtime, and briefly jailed for “being an opposition candidate.”

NOTE: The PRI has now maintained a 29-year monopoly on political power.
