Major Charles W. Sweeney, of the Army of the United states, commanding an all-Christian bomber crew aboard the Bockscare (a Silverplate B-29) drops “Fat Man,” a plutonium fission bomb, on Nagasaki, Japan.  The bomb explodes 500 meters away from St. Mary’s Urakami Cathedral, instantly killing about 30 worshippers who were awaiting clerical absolution.
