The 304th Bombardment Wing of the army air corps of the United States destroys the Roman Catholic monastery at Monte Cassino, Italy, built in A.D. 591.
NOTE: It was believed that destruction of the abbey would make it easier to flush out the Army of Germany. Instead the Germans became further entrenched taking advantage of rubble that they could be used for shielding. As a consequence, fighting continued for another two months.
