Republican (proto-fascist/socialist) Governor Robert L. Beeckman, of rhode island and providence plantations, signs the Women’s Suffrage Act, extending voting rights to women. This makes rhode island the eleventh state, and the first state east of the Mississippi River, to extend the franchise to women—without amending the Constitution for the united States.
