Democratic (constitutionalist) President Cleveland signs the Labor Day Act, designating the first Monday in September as “Labor Day.” September is deliberately chosen to draw attention away from the socialist “International Labor Day” (May 1) remonstrance of the Haymarket Riot, in Chicago, Illinois (May Day 1886).
