Republican (nationalist) President Grant signs the Holiday Act of 1870, declaring the fourth of July a federal holiday to celebrate the nation’s birthday.
NOTE: The fourth of July was the birthday of the voluntary Union, which had been dissolved for nearly a decade. A more appropriate date for Congress to have chosen would have been July 28th, the anniversary of the false ratification of the fraudulent 14th amendment.
