Republican (nationalist) President Grant signs the Trade Mark Act of 1870, giving corporations exclusive ownership over unique symbols that identify their products.

       NOTE: Although Article I, Section 8 [Clause 8] of the Constitution for the united States authorizes Congress to regulate the granting of copyrights and patents, it makes no such provision for trademarks.
