The Battle of Franklin (Tennessee): Major General John M. Schofield, commanding the compulsory Union Army of the Ohio, defeats the Confederate (a voluntary union) Army of Tennessee, commanded by brevet General John Bell Hood.

       NOTE: While both armies were evenly matched at 27,000, the compulsory Union suffered less than a ten percent casualty rate, while the Confederacy suffered a casualty rate of nearly 25%, including the deaths of five Confederate generals.
