The Battle of Atlanta (Georgia): Major General William T. Sherman, commanding the compulsory Union Military Division of the Mississippi, defeats the Confederate Army of Tennessee, commanded by Lieutenant General John Bell Hood.  Although Hood loses the battle, he is still able to hold onto Atlanta.  Over 8,000 Americans lose their lives.
