In Newport, Rhode Island, an angry mob, led by Joseph Packwood, a New London, Connecticut, shipping captain, board, hijack, burn and scuttle HMS Liberty (which at one time was owned by John Hancock, a Boston, Massachusetts, sea merchant).  This was done in retaliation after Captain William Reid, of the Royal Navy and commander the Liberty seized and towed two cargo ships, one of which was commanded by Packwood.
