The Battle of New Market (Virginia): Major General John C. Breckinridge (former Vice President of the united States), commanding the Confederate (a voluntary union) Department of Western Virginia and the Cadet Corps of the Virginia Military Institute defeats the compulsory Union Department of West Virginia, commanded by Major General Franz Sigel, forcing the Army of the united States to withdraw from the Shenandoah Valley.

       NOTES:

  • Breckinridge held the Cadet Corps (some as young as 14) in reserve, until it seemed he was on the verge of defeat.  Only then did he give the command for their deployment, “Put the boys in; and may God forgive me for the order.”
  • Sigel was an exiled “Forty-Eighter” (German proto-communist).
