The Battle of Yellow Tavern (Virginia): Major General Philip H. Sheridan, commanding the Cavalry Corps of the compulsory Union Army of the Potomac, defeats the First Virginia Cavalry, temporarily commanded by Confederate (a voluntary union) Major General Fitzhugh Lee.
NOTE: Three hours into the battle, the original Confederate commander, Major General James Ewell Brown “Jeb” Stuart was mortally wounded.
