Commander-in-Chief Abraham Lincoln, of the united States, with Senate confirmation, promotes Major General Ulysses Simpson (a.k.a. Hiram Ulysses) Grant to the rank of Lieutenant General (a rank previously only held by George Washington), and given the post of General in Chief of the Army of the united States. His previous command, the Military Division of the Mississippi, is turned over to Major General William T. Sherman. Grant decides to station himself in the field with the Army of the Potomac, which remains under the command of Major General George Meade.
