The Battle of Gettysburg continues: At the skirmish of Little Round Top, Lieutenant Colonel Joshua Lawrence Chamberlain, commanding the 20th/ Volunteer Regiment, defeats the Alabama Brigade, commanded by Brigadier General Evander Law. Chamberlain successfully defends the extreme southern end of the compulsory Union line, thus preventing a flanking maneuver that would have given the Confederacy (a voluntary union) its first victory on Union soil.
