The siege of Vicksburg (Mississippi) begins with the Battle of Champion Hill: Major General Ulysses Simpson (a.k.a. Hiram Ulysses) Grant, commanding the compulsory Union Army of the Tennessee defeats the Confederate Army of Vicksburg commanded by Major General John Pemberton.

NOTE: Pemberton retreated into Vicksburg, where Grant, after two failed assaults, decided to lay siege to the city, and wait Pemberton out.
