The Battle of Chancellorsville (Virginia) concludes: After nearly a week of fighting, General Robert E. Lee, commanding, the Confederate Army of Northern Virginia, defeats the compulsory Union Army of the Potomac, commanded by Major General Joseph Hooker. The turning point in the battle came four days previous, when Lee split his forces, sending Brigadier General Thomas Jackson, and his “Stonewall” Brigade around the Union army, which forced the collapse of Hooker’s flank.
NOTE: Over 3,000 Americans lost their lives, including Jackson who was mortally wounded on a nighttime reconnaissance patrol.

A military court martial, in Dayton (federal enclave of) Ohio, hands down united States v. Vallandigham, convicting Democratic (constitutionalist) former de facto Congressman Clement L. Vallandigham, of criticizing the War of Federal Aggression.
NOTE: Although civilian courts were still functioning in the area, Vallandigham, a civilian, was tried in a military court to prevent local jurors from invoking Jury Nullification.
