Burnside’s “Mud March” begins: Major General Ambrose E. Burnside, commander of the compulsory Union Army of Potomac leads his troops out of camp to begin a winter offensive against Confederate forces.

       Postscript: The compulsory Union Army of the Potomac was stuck for three days in mud and a blinding sleet storm, and suffered as many casualties as from a typical battle—without encountering a single Confederate Soldier.
