Republican (nationalist) President Abraham Lincoln, of the united States, extends diplomatic recognition to Haiti and Liberia.
NOTE: Although this might be seen as a progressive gesture. It very well MAY have been part of Lincoln’s agenda to deport all freedmen from the Union.
