The Battle of Shiloh Church/Pittsburg Landing (Tennessee) begins: General Albert Sidney Johnston, commanding the Confederate (a voluntary union) Army of Mississippi, nearly overwhelms the compulsory Union Army of Army of the Tennessee, commanded by Major General Ulysses Simpson (a.k.a. Hiram Ulysses) Grant, in an effort to drive the Army of the united States out of Tennessee. Johnston is killed during the battle. His command passes to General P.G.T. Beauregard.
