  39 – former American (nativist; a.k.a. “know-nothing”) Senator John Bell, of Tennessee, nominee of the Constitutional Union (nationalist) Party;

  12 – Senator Stephen A. Douglas, of Illinois, nominee of the northern wing of the Democratic (constitutionalist) Party.
