Republican (constitutionalist) President John Quincy Adams signs the protectionist Tariff Act of 1828 (a.k.a. the “Tariff of Abominations”), raising duties on almost all imported goods 62%.  Tariffs are disproportionately paid for by southern, agricultural States to fund internal improvements in the northern, industrial States.
