The National Convention, of the Republic of France, orders that the amount of Assignats (Bills of Credit), in circulation be reduced to 40,000,000,000, and that the copper plate used for printing the the paper money be destroyed. Just three years before the amount of Assignats in circulation was only 2,100,000,000.
Postscript: Even though plates were supposedly broken, another 10,000,000,000 Assignats were created over the next six weeks.
