Victor Emmanuel III, of Italy, asks Fascist Prime Minister Benito Mussolini to resign, now that the allies (the United Kingdom and the United States) have landed on the peninsula of Anzio. The king appoints Marshal Pietro Badoglio, of the Army of Italy, and a member of the Fascist Party, as the new Prime Minister, who orders the immediate arrest of Mussolini.
