The Battle of Long Island (a.k.a. Battle of Brooklyn Heights): Lieutenant General William Howe, commanding a force of 20,000 British regulars, along with 2,000 German mercenaries, defeats the Continental Army, commanded by General George Washington. This forces Washington’s retreat onto Manhattan Island.
