The Battle of White Plains (New York): Lieutenant General William Howe, commanding 4,000 regular of the Army of Great Britain along with German mercenaries, defeats the Continental Army, commanded by General George Washington. Again Washington exacts a heavy price on the British that delays their advance, and enables an orderly retreat for the Continental Army.
