FIRST SALUTE: Johannes de Graaff, Governor of the Dutch Caribbean enclave of Sint Eustatius, orders an 11-gun salute to the USS Andrew Doria. This is the first international recognition of the united States as a sovereign nation.

The Battle of Fort Washington (New York): Lieutenant General William Howe, commanding the Army of Great Britain, North America along with German mercenaries (soldiers of fortune), captures Fort Washington commanded by Colonel Robert Magaw, along with 3,000 regulars of the Continental Army. This forces General George Washington to retreat to New Jersey.
