James II (r. 1685 – 1688) appoints Joseph Dudley as Royal Governor of the Dominion of New England (the colony of Massachusetts Bay).  Previous governors had been elected by His Majesty’s subjects living in the colony.  But James’ intention is to consolidate the colonies of Massachusetts Bay with the colonies of Connecticut, New Hampshire, and Rhode Island and Providence Plantations, into the Dominion of New England.
