Edward VI (an Anglican, r. 1547 – 1553) dies of tuberculosis, aggravated by congenital syphilis that he inherited from his father Henry VIII (a Catholic, until 1534; an Anglican afterward; r. 1509 – 1547). Contrary to his father’s wishes, Edward named his cousin Lady Jane Grey (an Anglican, r. 1553) as his heir. This creates a schism between Jane’s supporters and those of Edward’s sister Princess Mary (a Catholic, r. 1553 – 1558),
