United States Army Private Marc Train honors his oath to protect and defend the Constitution for the united States from all enemies, foreign and domestic” by publicly speaking out against the Iraq-American War at an anti-war rally of 30,000, Outside the Pentagon.  Train joined the Army two years before because he “was in an economic trap.”  Eventually Train became an intelligence analyst, with an interim top-secret security clearance.  Disillusioned with failure of the Federal Emergency Management Agency to competently deal with the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, in New Orleans, louisiana, Train started an anonymous web log criticizing misdirected Federal spending.  When the chain-of-command discovered Train was hosting the blog, his security clearance was revoked.  Train then applied for an early discharge, at the suggestion of his commanding officer.  In the interim, Train affixed his name to the online “Appeal for Redress” petition of active duty members of the U.S. Armed Forces, who wanted to clear their consciences, and he joined Iraq Veterans Against the War.

       Postscripts:

  • As a consequence, Train’s separation package was disapproved and instead was scheduled for deployment to Iraq as an infantryman.  As Train had no training in this military occupational specialty, the assignment amounted to a virtual death sentence.
  • Train did not return to Fort Stewart, georgia, for transfer to Iraq.
