The Democratic (constitutionalist) Party denies re-nomination to President Cleveland, instead nominating former (socialist/proto-fascist) Representative William Jennings Bryan, of Nebraska.  The campaign platform approved by the convention calls for,

  • “The free and unlimited coinage of both silver and gold at the present legal ratio of 15 to 1” (a fixed, bimetallic standard);
  • Re-imposition of the unlawful, personal federal income tax;
  • A halt to immigration;
  • Greater power to the Interstate Commerce Commission to regulate the railroads;
  • Continued generous pensions for compulsory Union veterans of the War of Federal Aggression;
  • A vigorous program of internal improvements.

       NOTE: This event marks the Party’s transition from a laissez-faire, sound-money, free-market party of limited government to today’s nationalist party of partisan and special-interest causes.  From this point on, both the Republicans and Democrats began promoting a status quo of increased statism as the miracle cure for the problems they have created.
