Democratic (socialist/fascist) President Truman signs the National Security Act of 1947, the most substantial reshuffling of the military-intelligence functions of the Federal government in its history.  The act:

  • Creates the National Military Establishment, headed by the Secretary of Defense (foreign military aggression);
  • Renames the department of war, as the Department of the Army, but maintaining Cabinet level status;
  • Maintains the department of the navy with Cabinet level status;
  • Reorganizes the marine corps as an independent branch of the United states Armed Forces, within the Department of the Navy;
  • Establishes the Department of the Air Force with Cabinet level status, and separates the aviation component of the U.s. Army into an independent branch of the U.s. Armed Forces;
  • Removes the Central Intelligence Group from the under the control of the Joint Chiefs of Staff of the U.s. Armed Forces, and designates it as an independent civilian establishment, the Central Intelligence Agency.

      Commander-in-Chief Truman issues Executive Order 9877, renaming the army and navy of the United states, and the United states Army and the U.s. Navy.  Truman assigns unlawful functions for the U.s. Army that includes:

  • To uphold and advance the national policies and interests of the United States;
  • The occupation of land areas;
  • To provide, as directed by proper authority, such missions and detachments for service in foreign countries as may be required to support the national policies and interests of the United States;
  • To provide Marine Forces together with supporting air components, for service with the Fleet in the seizure or defense of advanced naval bases and for the conduct of limited land operations in connection therewith.
