The Battle of Carrick’s Ford (western Virginia): Major General George B. McClellan, commanding the compulsory Union Department of the Ohio,  defeats a brigade of the Army of the Confederate States, commanded by Brigadier General Robert S. Garnett.

NOTE: One of the few casualties in the Battle was Garnett, who became the very first General killed in the war.

Postscript: The successful western Virginia campaign kept the unionist counties of western Virginia under Federal control for the rest of the war, and propelled McClellan to become General in Chief of the Army of the united States.
