The Sack of Rome: King Alaric I, of the Visigoths, after an 18-month on-again/off-again siege, enters Rome with an armed force of forty-thousand.  They pillage and set fire to the city.  Alaric does this in retaliation for having been attacked by Emperor Honorius, while they were in negotiations.
