The fall of Rome: Flavius Odovacar, a Germanic mercenary general, in the pay of the western Roman Empire, deposes Emperor Romulus Augustulus, and claims the title “King of Italy.”  This brings to an end the western Roman Empire.  Although the Roman Empire still flourishes in the east from its capital, Constantinople.
