The superior court of Orange County (california) hands down people v. Solomona: judge Richard F. Toohey sentences Pete Tavita Solomona to six years in prison for the killing of Brandon Ketsdever, in response to misdemeanor trespass, and petty theft. This is Double Jeopardy, as two previous juries had either not been able to reach a guilty verdict, or the presiding judge ordered a new trial.
NOTE: Today, these are called “hung” juries, and a retrial (Double Jeopardy) is at the discretion of the prosecutor; historically, this would be considered an acquittal, and the accused could not be retried.
