The Federation of United states Medical Boards, issues its Model Guidelines for the Use of Controlled Substances in the Treatment of Pain, recommending that the Drug Enforcement Administration take a proactive role in preventing physicians from “over prescribing” narcotics to their patients.
Postscript: DEA adoption of this policy has forced many caring physicians to close their practices rather than make the painful choice between seeing their patients under medicated or face a DEA investigation for abusing their prescription privileges.
