The Washington Post publishes a front page article attacking the relevance of Gary S. Webb’s “Dark Alliance” series as published in the San Jose (California) Mercury News.
NOTE: The real reason for the attack was not because the allegations that the Central Intelligence Agency had ignored cocaine smuggling by the Nicaraguan Contra rebels was not true, but that it challenged the Post’s status as a “gatekeeper” newspaper. Quickly thereafter, the New York Times and the Los Angeles Times, the two other “gatekeeper” newspapers began attacking Webb as well.
