Jan Palach, a 21-year-old student of history and political economics at Charles University, sets himself ablaze, in Wenceslas Square, Prague, Czechoslovakia, to protest the invasion of his nation by the Soviet Red Army, and subsequent deposition of liberal First Secretary Alexander Dubcek, of the Communist Party of Czechoslovakia.
