ELECTION DAY: Republican (nationalist) acting President of the Senate John J. Ingalls fraudulently announces the election of Republican former Senator Benjamin Harrison, of Indiana, over Democratic (constitutionalist) President President Cleveland (233 – 168). Discounting the stolen Electoral votes of Indiana and New York, along with the ineligible Electoral votes of the federal enclaves of Nevada and Ohio, and the Virginia enclave of West Virginia, Cleveland would have won (217 – 156).
Postscript: After Harrison was in office, a disgruntled Matthew Quay, Republican Party boss of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, who was turned down for a Cabinet position, complained “how close a number of men were compelled to approach … the penitentiary to make him [Harrison] President.”
