In Citronelle, Alabama, Lieutenant General Richard Taylor, surrenders the Confederate (a voluntary union) Department of Alabama, Mississippi and East Louisiana—the last force remaining east of the Mississippi River—to compulsory Union Major General Edward R.S. Canby, commanding the compulsory Union Army of the Western Mississippi.
