The ten month siege of Petersburg Virginia ends: Major General George Pickett, of the Army of Northern Virginia, loses 5,200 Soldiers under his command, when Major General Philip H. Sheridan, commanding the compulsory Union Army of the Shenandoah breaks through the Confederate line at Five Forks.  Upon hearing the news, General Robert E. Lee, commander of the Armies of the Confederacy, sends a message to President Davis that Richmond has become untenable, which prompts Davis to order that the capital be moved to Danville, Virginia.
