Colonel Martin Burke, Commandant of Fort Lafayette (a.k.a. the “American Bastille”) hangs Captain Robert Cobb Kennedy, of the Confederate First Louisiana Regular Infantry, for his attempt to burn New York City, in retaliation for the scorched-earth strategy in the Shenandoah Valley of the Commonwealth of Virginia by compulsory Union General Phillip H. Sheridan.
