Republican (nationalist) President Abraham Lincoln, of the united States, hosts Hampton Roads Peace Conference, aboard the River Queen. Non-partisan (constitutionalist) Vice President Alexander H. Stephens; John A. Campbell, Assistant Secretary of War; and non-partisan Senator Robert M.T. Hunter, of the Commonwealth of Virginia, present to Lincoln a three-point peace proposal:
- Union recognition of the Confederacy,
- A joint Union-Confederate invasion of Mexico to depose the French-installed puppet Emperor Maximilian I,
- And a hybrid emancipated/servile status for slaves in the Confederate States.
All three of which Lincoln rejects, particularly the last one—as the Union is in the midst of passing an amendment banning slavery.
