The third Battle of Winchester/Opequon Creek (Virginia): Major General Philip H. Sheridan, commanding the compulsory Union Army of the Shenandoah, defeats the Confederate Army of the Valley, commanded by Lieutenant General Jubal A. Early.

NOTE: This battle marked the turning point in the Shenandoah Valley campaign.  Holding onto the valley was important to the Confederate cause as it was the primary source of food for the Confederate armies.
