Commander-in-Chief Abraham Lincoln, of the united States, appoints renegade War Democrat (constitutionalist) Senator Andrew Johnson, of the Confederate State of Tennessee, to be Military Governor of the compulsory Union-occupied areas of Tennessee. Lincoln assigns Johnson the military rank of Brigadier General.
Postscript: Johnson’s military dictatorship was harsh. He told his lieutenants to be particularly cruel to those subject to his jurisdiction who asserted their constitutional rights as Tennesseans.
