The Battle of Mesilla (federal enclave of New Mexico): Lieutenant Colonel John R. Baylor, commanding the Second Texas Cavalry Regiment, raises the flag of the Confederacy (a voluntary union), after it was abandoned by Major Isaac Lynde, and his superior compulsory Union force.
Postscript: The Union abandoned New Mexico, which allowed Baylor to set himself up as military governor.
