The Battle of Philippi (western Virginia): In the first land battle of the War of Federal Aggression, Brigadier General Thomas A. Morris, commanding a reinforced regiment of the Militia of Indiana, defeats a division of untrained, poorly armed recruits, commanded by Colonel George A. Porterfield, of the Army of the Confederate States.

       NOTE: There were 30 casualties on both sides.
