The Battle of Chapultepec ends: After two days of fighting, Major General Winfield Scott, commanding the Army of Mexico of the united States, defeats a regiment of the Army of Mexico, commanded by General Nicolas Bravo. When Bravo, outnumbered five-to-one, orders a retreat, five Cadets of the Military Academy of Mexico fight to the death. One of them, Juan Escutia, wraps himself in the flag of Mexico and leaps 200 feet to his death rather than see it captured by the invading Americans.
Postscript: The next day the united States flag was raised over Mexico City.
